Cascadia Solar Empowering Resilience: East Jefferson Fire & Rescue’s Transition to Solar Energy on Marrowstone Island

November 21, 2024\Marrowstone Island, WA, USA

Cascadia Solar has equipped East Jefferson Fire & Rescue with a state-of-the-art 23.1 kW solar system at their Marrowstone Island, WA volunteer fire station. The system includes 55 high-performance Silfab SIL-420 BG Elite solar panels, proudly manufactured in Washington, along with four Tesla Powerwall 3 units and Ironridge racking, supplied by Platt in Port Angeles, WA.

With an expected annual energy generation of 23,546 kWh, the system will save the fire and rescue department approximately $2,500 on electricity costs each year. Beyond cost savings, the solar system is connected to a battery system with 54 kWh of reliable backup power during grid outages. This backup will support critical equipment such as radios, communication devices, and garage door openers while keeping lights, refrigerators, and microwaves running in the crew quarters, allowing the department to continue operations during emergencies and grid outages.

Cascadia Solar provided exceptional service during the installation of the solar system with battery back-up at East Jefferson Fire and Rescue Station 5 on Marrowstone Island.  The Marrowstone Island Foundation was seeking a state grant to fund the installation, and Cascadia developed three tailored system designs to align with the grant requirements before funding was secured. At every stage of the process, their team was helpful, prompt, and thorough in providing the necessary information and materials.

About East Jefferson Fire & Rescue’s Journey to Solar

East Jefferson Fire & Rescue embarked on a journey to enhance emergency preparedness for Marrowstone Island, a self-reliant community with limited access to the mainland. Recognizing the risks of potential disasters that could disrupt power and isolate the island, Doug Moore from the Marrowstone Island Foundation advocated for a solar panel and battery storage system at the Fire & Rescue Volunteer Station 5. This would ensure the station remains operational during emergencies.

In partnership with Cascadia Solar, the project moved from vision to reality, culminating in its completion in 2024 after two years of dedicated effort. This initiative strengthens the island’s resilience and self-sufficiency in the face of natural disasters, providing a sustainable energy solution for its future.

Grant Funding Made this Project Possible!

The Washington State Department of Commerce played a pivotal role in funding this project, covering 70% of the costs through its Solar plus Storage for Resilient Communities program. This program supports solar and backup systems for community buildings that deliver essential services. The remaining 30% of funding was provided by the Marrowstone Island Foundation, which can recover a portion of its investment through the federal Investment Tax Credit’s direct pay provision.

We love Silfab solar modules – not only do they look great, but they are quality products we are proud to install.  Cascadia Solar has been installing solar panels on the Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas in Washington since 2008, and we love offering a WA-made product.  This year, our team had the pleasure of touring the Silfab manufacturing plant in Burlington, WA, and it was awesome to see the modules being assembled just a few hours away from our shop.”
