- Controls Engineer

- Process Engineer

- Support the running of production and ensure that process integrity for machines is in place.

Silfab is searching for a hard-working and detail-oriented Junior R&D Engineer to work with the R&D team based out of the Mississauga manufacturing plant. This position provides good opportunity for the right person with a passion for renewable energy to be an integral part of the team in the fast-paced research and development of Silfab’s portfolio of solar module products. The ideal candidate must thrive in a challenging situation, have a passion for success, be open to learning and possess the drive to achieve the company Key Performance Initiatives (KPI’s).
Position scope and responsibilities:
- Responsible for managing creation of PV module and mini-module samples for R&D prototyping and in-house reliability testing
- New product designs/concepts (e.g. half-cell, multi-wire, cell size format, etc.)
- New and alternate raw materials and components (solar cells, backsheet, junction box, encapsulants, etc.)
- Responsible for drafting and managing laboratory schedules for short and long duration experimental tasks.
- Design or redesign product layouts and drawings using AutoCAD 2D.
- Responsible for design, project scheduling, manufacturing and shipping of PV modules for new product or component certifications as well as other third-party testing projects (e.g. performance, reliability).
- Support the R&D Team for all reliability and performance testing of new products/design concepts, and components. Generate detailed reports on quantified degradation and visual/EL inspection criteria.
- Mechanical load test (per IEC and UL PV standards)

Primary Responsibilities
- Comply with all occupational health and safety (OHS) guidelines
- Inspect worksites and review working conditions
- Document reports of occurrences and record statistical information

About the Opportunity:
In this role, you will be responsible for troubleshooting and maintaining production equipment, which includes electrical, hydraulic, mechanical and pneumatic systems, while working from wiring diagrams, engineering drawings and equipment specifications.
Primary Responsibilities:
Working primarily on voltages up to 600V (AC/DC), you will:
- Repair and replace electrical/hydraulic/pneumatic and electronic components such as motors, contractors, relays, timers, types of switches, PLCs, light curtains, motor controls, valves, etc.;
- Run new power supply lines to new/relocated equipment according to IEE wiring regulations, Electrical Safety Code and company policy;
- Wire new control panels according to supplied drawings and verbal instructions while adhering to Hydro Codes and other applicable standards and regulations;
- Recognize and diagnose faults on electrical equipment or systems, which may involve complex interlocking, interrelated circuits, integrated systems and complex sequencing;
- Install, examine, replace and repair electronic wiring, receptacles, switch boxes, conduits, feeders, cable assemblies, lighting fixtures and other electrical components;
- Maintain production equipment to maximize operating performance and assist with maintaining electrical spare parts inventory levels;
- Perform repairs on equipment to restore them to proper and safe work conditions;
- Perform installation, set up, modification and relocation of equipment to accommodate or improve production requirements;
- Read/write electrical and electronic schematics/diagrams, basic hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams;
- Test electrical and electronic equipment and components for continuity, current, voltage and resistance;
- Make trade calculations for load requirements and select appropriate sizes/grades of components in accordance with current electrical code;
- Ensure production schedule is not jeopardized due to machine break down, or unsafe operating conditions and inform Engineering and Maintenance Manager about changes in electric circuits and update original diagrams;
- Always follow LOCK OUT procedure on unsafe machines/machines being serviced;
- Adhere to work orders, preventive/predictive maintenance systems by filling in required forms; and
- Organize workplace to comply with housekeeping requirements.
Education and Experience:
- In order to be successful in this role, you must have a valid Provincial Industrial Electrician’s license (preferably inter-provincial), knowledge of applicable electrical codes and 3-5 years of experience employed as an Industrial Electrician, ideally within a production environment.
- Able to read wiring diagrams, electrical/mechanical/pneumatic/hydraulic schematics and ladder/function block logic, you have working knowledge of industrial PCs and PLCs (Siemens Step 7, Beckhoff TwinCat, etc.) and electric circuitry consisting of contractors, relays, main voltage/control voltage, limit switches and proximity sensors, etc.
- Hands-on experience applying hydra-electric, electro-pneumatic and electro-mechanical theories is a must as is the ability to work well with minimal supervision and take initiative.
- A proven team player and strong communicator with excellent organizational skills, you will be a great fit for this role if you are able to:
